Irony - or the balance of chance & misfortune

Last Tuesday was a day disguised as any other ordinary day, but in fact it was extremely special. It was a day on which the balance of chance and misfortune, or irony if you will, could be witnessed being played out in a way one rarely has the opportunity to observe. A very dear friend of mine, having had her fair share of hardship and misfortune over the years, scooped up the prize for British Female Inventor of the Year 2006, a prestigious award and ample recognition for her great achievements in developing the Pre.vu, a cool technology that allows you to preview the music on a CD.
    At virtually exactly the same time as Morag was being drowned in a sea of flash lights exploding at the announcement of the winner, another acquaintance (not a very close one, admittedly, but still) sat in court hearing the verdict of his and two colleagues' three year struggle to combat extradition to the United States regarding their role in the Enron scandal. BBC and many other news media lept at the verdict that extradition could go ahead and I can only imagine what must be going through the head of this father of small children, facing the prospect of a court-battle in the US, accused for wire-fraud. Moreover, this ruling brings to stark attention the recent change in UK law, fuelled by all the fear of terrorism, that UK citizens can now be extradited to the US without any evidence, no longer assumed innocent until proven guilty, but the very opposite: guilty, until proven innocent. Albeit the speculations being rife as to whether the three are guilty or not, the interesting detail is that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in the UK has chosen not to prosecute and moreover, refuses to provide even an explanation why they have decided not to. It is really anyone's guess what the end of all this will be.
    Such are the laws of irony or the balance of chance and misfortune, but rare are the occasions when both happen to people you know on the same day at virtually the same time.
